I am getting this error:
The maximum number of recommendations per day have been sent!
Even though I have upped the limit to 50 000 in parameters

Any suggestions?

please try to change the limit in the parameters (component) of the menu item.
They are overwriting the default component parameters.

I have changed that to 50000 and it still doesn't work

How many recommendations are existing for today in the database?
Do you have installed Joomfish?
Do you have set the limit in the components configuration and in the menu item components parameters?

Please try to set the limit in both places to 100.
